One of the biggest honors as a photographer is when a dear friend asks me to photograph their wedding. Some ladies want to be a part of the wedding party, standing with the couple as a bridesmaid or maid of honor. Not me. I want to be behind the camera. Doing what I do creating life long memories, while supporting them and their love throughout the day. Being trusted with this job is something I will never take lightly and I would be remiss to say I don’t get a little nervous. It’s my goal to make the best pictures of each couple’s day and this certainly holds true for my friends as well.

When Kristen asked me to photograph her and John’s Alaskan farm wedding I almost exploded with joy! Brent and I had so much fun photographing them at Mt. Bachelor several winters ago for their winter wonderland engagement session we knew their wedding would be just as fun! It’s still one of my favorite engagement sessions ever!

Kristen and John’s Seaside Farm Wedding

Kristen and John’s wedding was on a beautiful summer day in Homer, Alaska. Their farm wedding was filled with love, the natural beauty of Alaska and many sweet DIY details. It was my second time visiting Alaska and the entire trip did not disappoint. The only disappointing thing was how short our visit was (oh and the crazy bug bites I got). We lucked out with the most beautiful weather and squeaked by shortly before a large fire started in the area – I believe the following week.

Looking back on these images I am filled with happiness and a certain type of nostalgia for my friends, for the summer, for the beautiful location. You see, I met Kristen and John working in Antarctica (Are you sick of hearing about Antarctica yet?) Like Brent and I, Kristen and John’s love story started at the bottom of the world. Many of their wedding guests were fellow friends from the ice and so their wedding was both a celebration of their love and a mini reunion. I wish we could time travel back to their wedding weekend.

DIY Style

The ceremony was held on the lawn at Seaside Farm Don’t be fooled by their dated website. The farm is magical. It is actually the Kilcher Family (remember, Jewel?) farm. Anyways, the views are spectacular, there is a promenade down to the beach, a little lodge, tucked away cabins, and places to camp. It very much reminded me of some farm hostels in New Zealand. Kristen is a talented cook and DIY expert. The wedding had so many thoughtful details including the world’s best charcuterie and preserves that Kristen made herself, fresh oysters, a delicious ham leg (reminding me of jamón from Spain), DIY bourbon bar, thoughtful DIY decor with pictures of their travels all over the world.

The day started with a first look between Kristen and John on the beach with the Kenai Mountain Range in across the bay and ended with a dance party when the late summer sun finally set around 10pm. One of my favorite memories is taking Kristen and John for sunset photos in a wide open meadow photographing them frolicking around as newlyweds. Thank you Kristen and John for having Brent and I play such an important role in your wedding day! We love you guys!
